16. Schoenburg Castle
Where: Oberwesel, Germany
The Schoenburg Castle, which is located in the middle of a wooded setting, is just 950m from the Oberwesel train station and 1km from the medieval town centre. This 11th-century castle is currently owned and run by a family and sits on top of a now-extinct volcano. Its bright rooms provide sweeping views of the vineyards of southern Styria inside a fortress that was once built to keep the Huns and Turks away. The outdoor terrace is among the best places to relax in the castle, and you can enjoy a glass of the Winkler-Hermaden wine made by the family. 18. Schloss Sommersdorf
Where: Burgoberbach, Germany
This 14th-century castle is the perfect base if you are planning to look around the walled villages in Bavaria. While this is actually not a hotel, owner Dr. Manfred Baron von Crailsheim has kindly allowed to share its delights with guests. Although quite small, the castle has been renovated and has self-catering apartments and rooms for guests. You can also try asking the Baron to allow you a look into his antique automobile collection that include a 1905 Cadillac, a 1913 Ford Tin Lizzy in dark blue, and a 1926 Durant Rugby Tourer.
19. Talabgaon Castle
Where: Dausa, India
The fort was built in 1818 and is still owned by the same family until today. The white walls inside the castle are very intricately designed and the rooms, very spacious and airy. The Heritage Room offers access to a traditional Rajasthani enclosed balcony (called ajharokha) overlooking the garden. The place also has a pool that you can enjoy in peace, or you could also choose to catch a match at the hotel’s Polo grounds. This grand Tudor castle was once the home of Henry VII and Anne Boleyn during their honeymoon. This huge accommodation offers old-world rooms and suites and has private bathrooms, and an in-room massage treatment can also be requested.
