Easy DIY Salt Dough Christmas Tree Decorations

There’s nothing like Christmas decorations you made yourself.. or the kids made themselves with your help, such as this salt dough Christmas decors.

You see the pride in their eyes after you hang their work and you can’t help but feel the Christmas love. Even if they left an incredible mess.

Whenever Christmas approaches, my house inevitably looks like a war zone. Holiday decorations, pine needles and all, are strewn all over the floor.

Gift wrapping paper haphazardly piled in one corner, ribbons carelessly thrown on top.

And don’t get me started about the food.

My kitchen, on good days, looks mildly Pinteresting, but during the holidays? It just looks mildly disastrous.

But that’s the thing about Christmas.

Even though the house looks like an eternal mess, it is a happy kind of mess.

So as if everything I mentioned above is not yet enough, there’s another thing I think we all must do: make our own Christmas tree decoration!

I know, doing it just adds to the clutter, but I promise the end product will be pretty and special.

Now, here’s how to make DIY salt dough Christmas tree decorations!

Here’s what you’ll need….

1. 1 cup of salt
2. 2 cups of flour
3. 3/4 cup of water

For decorating:

• Paint
• Glitter
• Stickers
• Clear Spray

Let’s start!

1. In a large bowl, mix salt and flour together.

2. Gradually stir in water.

3. Mix well until it forms a doughy consistency.

4. Turn the dough onto the bench and knead with your hands until smooth and combined.

5. Make your creations using the salt dough. Roll flat and cut out with cookie cutter.

6. Punch holes with a straw for loops.

7. Place the salt dough creations into the oven at 180C. The amount of time needed to bake depends on the size and thickness of the salt dough creations.

8. Once cooled, use paint, glitter, and stickers to decorate.

9. Spray with clear spray for a nice finish!

I am so excited to do this at home! I also encourage you to do this with your kids.

Not only is making this craft a learning experience, all the mixing and rolling and — yay! — colouring and painting will be 100 times more fun with the little ones around!

Okay, I know what you’re thinking: it will be 100 times messier, too.

BUT there’s something you should always remember… and we say this every year to convince ourselves to.
