They Say This is the Correct Way to Wash Your Hair

There are so many hair washing methods out there that it can be hard to know which one is the “correct” way. Do you use shampoo and conditioner? Do you only use conditioner? How do you lather up your hair properly? And what about those of us who have curly hair – how do we get the most out of our wash? Read on for some tips on how to make sure your hair is clean and healthy – no matter what type of head of hair you have!

You could be washing your hair wrong.

When it comes to our crowning glory, we can be so OC about it. We grew up being taught to wash it every day but for the hair experts, they advise the other way around – and that is less washing is the secret to a beautiful hair. Why is that so?

To be honest, we’re still pretty confused about the correct way to wash our hair. There are a lot of people telling us that “this is how it should be done” and etc. Another thing is, are we even using the right hair products? I guess, most of us don’t have enough knowledge on how to properly take care of our crowning glory.

We happened to stumble upon this Reddit post where user “Dammit_Jackie_” wrote detailed hair washing techniques to own the best tresses in town.

Step 1: Brush hair with a natural bristle brush

Before washing, start by brushing your hair FIRST. Brushing enhances blood flow in hour head and massages our scalp. It also helps in redistributing rich, natural emollient oils that our hair needs. Use a natural bristled brush instead of the synthetic ones because synthetic bristles causes friction on hair, leading to cuticle damage and breakage.

This is very much advisable because hair follicles plugged with sebum will normally age and then shuts down production sooner. Therefore, let’s keep our scalp clean.

Step 2: Rinse hair with warm water

Hair should be thoroughly rinsed with warm water before applying shampoo and conditioner. Warm water opens the cuticle which is viable for removing dirt and products trapped in the hair. This also helps in loosening flaking skin. Some products may have water-repelling ingredients that is why you’ve got to take time in rinsing your hair thoroughly.

Step 3: Part hair down centre, expose scalp and lather up

Standing away from the shower head, apply a dab of your favourite shampoo to the back of the crown, the front hairline, the nape of your neck and your temples. Massage your scalp using your fingertips and evenly spread shampoo. Pay extra attention to the greasy parts of your hair. This helps in removing dead skin and excess sebum that makes your hair frizzy, smelly and look greasy.

Tip: Don’t use more shampoo than you need but if your hair is long, double the amount.

Step 4: Rinse and re-scrub

Now that the scalp has been scrubbed and the hair has been shampooed, rinse your hair with the same scrub/massage technique, this time under the shower head. Apply firm but gentle pressure and avoid causing friction to your hair. In this way, we are exfoliating our hair and thoroughly removing dead cells and stimulating blood flow to our scalp, thereby encouraging healthy hair growth.

Step 5: Squeeze water and apply conditioner

Now that the hair is thoroughly rinsed, squeeze out the excess water from your hair so that we can maximise the absorption of conditioner when we apply it. Our hair is just fibers built out of protein and it has saturation point, so if our hair is wet with excess water, the conditioner will not be absorbed properly. Apply conditioner from mid-shaft downward to ends.

Tip: Wrap your hair in a towel and leave your conditioner in for 5 to 7 minutes. After, use a wide-tooth comb or your fingers and comb through, running the conditioner up to the root briefly.

Step 6: Finish by rinsing and towel dry

Finish off by washing your hair with the coldest water you can stand. Why? This is because our hair has an armor-like coat called cuticle, which expands when exposed to warm/heat and locks in when cold. By rinsing with cold water, it locks healthy nutrients and all that juicy moisture that makes our hair shiny and healthy.

Tip: Keep rinsing until there’s no trace of bubbles and don’t forget to wash thoroughly too because traces of conditioner in your body can trigger the formation of “bacne”.

More hair tips:

1. Only use shampoo and conditioner that’s made for your hair type.

There are plenty of products you can individually choose from but it is best if you consult the experts first to avoid damaging your hair from any unwanted and harmful chemicals.

2. Washing your hair depends on your hair type.

If you have oily and fine hair, you may need to wash daily. For dry and normal hair, you can choose to wash it every other day or at least 3 times a week.

3. Use a filter in your shower.

Experts recommend using a shower filter as it removes rust and minerals from the water that can dull the colour of your locks. We’ve tried this and it made our hair super soft and smooth.
