The McGrath Foundation has 117 Breast Care Nurses throughout Australia (we even have one right here in Gympie!). These AMAZING nurses are invaluable in supporting women and men going through one of the hardest periods of their life.
The McGrath Foundation was founded by Jane McGrath after her personal battle with breast cancer. Jane was only 31 when she was first diagnosed with breast cancer, and after her initial recovery, she was inspired to create a Foundation that could really make a difference to Australian women of all ages and backgrounds that are affected by breast cancer.
It was at the time of her re-diagnosis that Jane was lucky to have access to a breast care nurse for the first time. She realised the power of having someone on your side that was not only medically trained but who could also speak to you as a friend and clear up any confusion about complicated treatments and processes. So the mission of the McGrath Foundation is to ensure that every family going through breast cancer has access to this specialist support, no matter where they live – for free.
We want to help the McGrath Foundation to ensure more Australians have access to this brilliant service. And it isn’t hard.

What Exactly Do the Breast Care Nurses Do?
McGrath Breast Care Nurses are angels without wings. These wonderful women help families affected by breast cancer by providing physical, psychological and emotion support from the time of diagnosis, and throughout the breast cancer treatment. This support is provided free of charge – all funded by the wonderful work of the McGrath Foundation.
The Hard and Scary Facts About Breast Cancer
- Approximately 49 people will be diagnosed with breast cancer, EVERY DAY in Australia in 2017.
- 1 in 8 Australian women will be diagnosed with breast cancer before the age of 85.
- 144 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year.
- 90% of women diagnosed will be alive in five years – more people are surviving for longer, meaning specialist support is needed well beyond the initial diagnosis and treatment.
As of today, 79 more McGrath Breast Care Nurses are needed across the country to ensure that every family experiencing breast cancer has access to this specialist support and this is why we need your help!
And should you wish, you can also donate at your participating local BP
Service Station or online at the McGrath Foundation website.
