It’s a difficult decision to cut your hair, and it’s even more challenging once you decide you want to grow it out.
Sometimes, it can feel like you’re going from one awkward length to the next, with those glorious long locks far beyond the horizon. But, when you finally reach the length you want, there’s no better feeling in the world!
So how can you grow your hair out and still keep it healthy? Well, we have a few tips!
1. Stop Shampooing Your Hair Any More Than Once a Week
That doesn’t mean you can’t ‘rinse’ your hair. You should rinse it regularly, and run your fingers over your scalp to get any grit off. Especially if you get sweaty a lot. Shampoo gets your hair clean yes, but when you are trying to grow long hair, you need those beautiful oils to run through your hair and keep the ends nice and healthy. Plus shampooing can get quite rough on your hair. Wash it one day, and rinse with fresh water the other days when it needs refreshing. Depending on your hair type, you may condition in-between shampooing, but never shampoo without conditioning!
2. Only Use a Wide Tooth Comb on Long Locks
When it comes to combing, it’s all about gentle pulling and working out the tangles to avoid damaging your hair. Start at the bottom, and go really slowly. If your’e in a rush, you’re just going to rip your hair leaving it damaged, and leaving your scalp sore. Wide-toothed combs are really good if you struggle to be gentle, but a brush works if you know not to pull too hard and fast. Patience ladies!
3. Grab a Silk or Satin Pillowcase
Those beautifully soft and silky materials aren’t just nice to lie on, they are also great on your hair. They reduce ‘snags’ as you sleep, which means less brushing in the morning. If you can handle sleeping on it, you might also like to consider putting your hair into a loose braid at bedtime to avoid it getting matted overnight. This can be a particular problem for those that toss and turn.
4. Use Coconut Oil as a Weekly Treatment
Coconut oil has many benefits, and one of them is that it’s good for your hair. If you have dandruff, coconut oil can help. Oily scalp? Again, coconut oil will help. The trick is not using too much. Grab about a teaspoon, rub it well between the palms of your hands to heat it gently and make it consistent, and then starting at the ends, gently work the oil in. You don’t want it saturated, or it will leave oily marks on your pillow and will be difficult to wash out. If you can, leave the treatment in your hair for 24 hours, and time it just before your weekly shampoo.
