3. Consider Your Budget

If you want to dye your hair blonde you really need to think about your budget, because that’s what’s going to help you make the biggest decision in the process: DIY or salon job. If you’re absolutely sure that blonde hair is where you want to be, and you have quite dark hair, you should be open to the idea of having your hair done professionally at a salon. If you don’t want to spend the money, or you’re already a light shade and you think you can do it yourself go for it. But you should know that there are a lot of places you can go wrong. Unless you have some considerable experience with dying hair, we probably would recommend just biting the bullet and going to see a hair stylist.

4. Know Your Own Skills

Even if you get your hair done at a stylist, you can save money in the long term by maintaining your hair yourself instead of having regular appointments. But, to do this you’ll need to be honest with yourself about your own skills. Upkeep of your roots may not seem like it’s all that difficult, but if you’ve never done it before, and you’re trying to do your entire head all by yourself, you may find yourself in a bit of a pickle. Of course if you’re confident in your abilities, or you have a friend who is, doing your own upkeep is a great way to save money.

5. Maintenance And Protection

Unnatural blonde hair is really high maintenance, and that’s a reality that you’re just going to have to deal with if you’re dedicated to having blonde hair. As hair dye can damage the hair so much, and regular dying often makes it worse, it’s important that your understanding of hair health is on point. Regular moisturising, including leave-in hair masks, along with high quality colour-fast shampoos and conditioners are probably going to be on your shopping list, and they can all be expensive.

6. Embrace Different Versions

For those who want to try blonde, but aren’t quite sure if it’s going to suit them, there are other options. We’d recommend having a look at different styles that provide an opportunity to add a new colour into your hair. You could try highlights, ombre (where your hair colour is a gradient from light to dark or vice versa), balayage (which uses chunky highlights to create contrast), or flamboyage (which is a blend of ombre and balayage techniques). These styles can be complex to attempt at home, and there’s a chance that you might not get them right. So we’d recommend having a consultation with a stylist, so they can offer you some options and you can make a decision from there.

Being blonde might not be as straight-forward as you wanted, but it can definitely be worth it, and you never know, you might just have more fun!
