Yep, you heard us right the first time. We’re talking about a substance called ambergris, which is a secretion that is created in the digestive system of a sperm whale. Inside the whale, it’s intention is to encase sharp items or anything harmful the whale has swallowed to protect it. Once it gets to be a certain size, it get either vomited up by the whale, or expelled at the other end. Oh by the way, it’s also a common ingredient in fancy perfume, particularly that which is produced in France or Switzerland. The ambergris helps the scent in perfumes last longer, although we hope without any fishy after scents!
