13 Alternatives Uses for Bicarb In The Bathroom

Bicarb soda has so many uses around the home for cleaning and deodorising, but did you know it has a lot of personal uses as well? Bicarb can do just about anything and it is so cheap and readily available. Why not try out some of these for yourself?

1. Clean hairbrushes and combs

Soak brushes and combs in a sink filled with warm water and 1 teaspoon of bicarb to remove oil and product build-up. Rinse and air dry afterwards.

2. Boost your shampoo

Sprinkle a little bicarb in your hand along with your shampoo and lather and rinse as normal. Bicarb helps to remove product build-up leaving your hair cleaner and more manageable.

3. Relax Sore, tired feet

Soak feet in warm water with a few tablespoons of bicarb to reduce swelling, cleanse skin and draw out impurities.

4. Bath Soak

Add a few tablespoons to a hot bath and relax! The bicarb helps to remove perspiration and dirt build-up on the skin and draw out impurities leaving you feeling refreshed and squeaky clean.

5. Use Bicarb as a Skin Exfoliant

Make a paste of water and bicarb and apply to body or face and rub gently to exfoliate and remove dead skin cells.

6. Sooth Bug Bites and Bee Stings

Apply a paste of water and bicarb to the affected area. This will draw out poisons and the alkaline quality of bicarb neutralizes the acids in the insect saliva, stopping the itching.

7. Make Your Own Toothpaste

Does anyone else think toothpaste is really expensive, not to mention loaded with nasties? Try making your own using 1 teaspoon of bicarb, ½ teaspoon finely ground sea salt (don’t use iodised/table salt), 1 drop of peppermint or spearmint essential oil* (nice but not necessary) and a few drops of water, mix thoroughly. Paste should be thick enough to cling to toothbrush.

8. Freshen Your Breath with Bicarb

Put a teaspoon of bicarb in half a glass of water and rinse your mouth just like any other mouthwash, to neutralize odours, not just cover them.

9. Soak Dental Appliances

Dentures, retainers and mouthpieces all need a good clean but these cleaners can be expensive. Instead, try dissolving 2 teaspoons of bicarb in a dish of warm water and leave dentures in there for a few hours to soak. This will loosen food particles and neutralize odours.

 10. Prevent Smelly Underarms

If you’re like me and don’t handle harsh deodorant well, try using some bicarb instead. Pat it on just like baby powder!

11. Clean Dirty hands

My husband comes home filthy from work and harsh soaps are expensive and bad for his skin. Instead we use a paste of 3 parts bicarb to 1 part water or 3 parts bicarb to 1 part gentle hand soap and scrub to remove ground in dirt and odours.

12. Bicarb Can be Used As an Antacid

Bicarb is a safe and effective way to relieve indigestion and heartburn. ½ teaspoon in half a glass of water every 4-6 hours (no longer than 1 week)**

13. Alkalize your urine

UTI’s, and post-childbirth are the most common reasons to take expensive urinary alkalizers, but bicarb is the active ingredient in these and does the same job. ½ teaspoon in half a glass of water every 4-6 hours (no longer than 1 week)**

Do you have any more ideas for using Bicarb as a  product in the bathroom?

* Please note a lot of essential oils are not for ingesting, if you wish to use essential oil please source medical grade oil that can be safely consumed.

**Please note, if you are on a salt restricted diet ingesting bicarb is not advised as it is very high in sodium, please consult your doctor or pharmacist before doing so.
