Do It Yourself Honey Lip Balm

Do It Yourself Honey Lip Balm

We’re big lip balm lovers at SAHM, but we’re also big lip balm losers.

It seems that all we ever do is buy a fresh chapstick, use it once or twice, and then immediately set it free into the unknown.

To be honest, it’s driving us crazy. Plus, those lip balms are far from cheap (particularly when we never finish them). So, we thought we’d have a go at making our own lip balm.

Seeing as we rarely see it in shops, we thought we’d indulge in making some sweet honey lip balm. As it happened, we had some super yummy local honey on hand, but you can use whatever honey you want!

Homemade Honey Lip Balm

To make this awesome honey lip balm, you’ll need:

  • 2 tsp Grated Beeswax (heaped)
  • 2 tsp Shea Butter
  • 2 tsp Coconut Oil
  • 1 tsp Honey
  • Several small containers for storage

This makes quite a large amount (for lip balm), so feel free to lessen if you don’t want to make as much. Left too long, the honey in the lip balm may crystallise and become gritty, so try and make as much as you think you’ll use over a week. If the honey has separated, you’ll see small beads of honey around the edges of your container, which can certainly just be stirred in if it doesn’t bother you.

Making The Lip Balm

To make the lip balm:

  1. Put the beeswax, shea butter and coconut oil in a metal or glass bowl over a pot of water on the stove, creating a double boiler.
  2. Heat the water in the pot until the mixture has begun to melt, stirring frequently. Remove from heat.
  3. Stir in honey and mix thoroughly, ensuring the honey doesn’t clump together. If you’re working with already crystallised honey, you’ll need to add it during step 2.
  4. Carefully spoon or pour the mixture into the containers you have set aside, being careful not to spill it as the wax can be difficult to remove.
  5. Allow to sit for 15-20 minutes, or until cooled all the way through and hard.
  6. Use as a lip balm! Remember to store in a spot where the lip balm doesn’t get too hot.

Have a go experimenting with different varieties on this honey lip balm. We occasionally add a little vanilla, not for any benefit but just for the lovely smell. We’ve also found that a small amount of cinnamon gives this balm a mild spiced flavour.
