1. Wallpaper a Feature Wall
Feature walls can really make a boring space look incredible. And there is some beautiful wallpaper available now – no matter your style. You don’t have to go super bright – in fact, choose a design that reflects the colors in your room and adds a bit of drama.
Your local paint store should have books on wallpaper to choose from or shop online for really unique prints.

2. Create Your Own Artwork & Cushions
Most cheap shops now stock large canvasses (or places like Lincraft etc). If you’re handy with a paintbrush, try creating a unique piece of artwork yourself! If not, find a lovely piece of fabric that will match your room and staple it well to the canvas and hang it in your room. It can add a whole point of interest and really brighten your room.
If you buy a bit of extra fabric, you can make throw cushions to match!
3. Rearrange Your Furniture
This will cost you nothing but time. Sometimes, just changing around the furniture or moving items from room to room can make a massive difference to how a room feels. Change rugs around or just the couch and find some new knick-knacks that will look great in the room you are decorating.
4. Paint Your Kitchen Cupboards and Install New Handles
The kitchen and bathroom are the areas we use the most and have the most wear and tear. A cheap kitchen renovation can include a tin of paint, and grabbing some handles to replace tired, worn handles.
Kitchens should nearly always be light and bright – so choose beautiful white and contrasting handles in brass, black or chrome to really keep those lines nice and clean.
The most popular whites for kitchens include:
- Dulux Natural White
- Dulux Vivid White
- Dulux Hog Bristle Quarter
- Snowy Mountains Half
- Dulux Whisper White
- Antique White USA
- Dulux Lexicon Quarter
- Dulux White on White
5. Change Out the Bathroom and Kitchen Tapware
Tapware dates very easily, but it is also one of the easiest home renovations you can do. Gone are the days of just ‘silver’ colored tapware, there is now some beautiful brushed gold, black, and copper tapware that can really make a home renovation look luxe.
You might save a fortune buying your tapware online, but make sure you use a plumber for installation.

6. Install a Feature Light Over the Dining Room Table
If you have ever watched a renovation done by Joanna Gaines (love her) – she always has a feature chandelier or similar over the dining room table – and it looks incredible. A chandelier or industrial-style light will set you back a couple of hundred dollars, but it is an instant renovation.
Best Online Stores to Shop for Feature Chandeliers include:
- Mica Lighting
- JD Lighting
7. Don’t Like Your Tiles? Paint Them!
New tiles are hideously expensive. But did you know there is now a special tile paint that allows you to paint your tiles in the new colour of your choice?
There is a fair bit of preparation involved, but it is still a much cheaper renovation option than tiling.
You can buy tile paint from your local Bunnings.
8. Replace Your Kitchen Benchtops
Another budget renovation for your kitchen is to replace the benchtops. You can buy benchtop pieces from your local Bunnings or Ikea stores – and then have a carpenter install them on your current kitchen carcusses.
You can purchase lengths of laminate kitchen benchtops from just $100!
9. Rugs Can Hide Tired Flooring
I love rugs, but I hate carpet. You see, I think carpet is just disgusting. Rugs, I can replace them every few years (or wash them now there is washable rugs available). Plus if your renting or your flooring is just looking a whole lot of ‘Meh’ – rugs are a great option.
10. Paint Your Front Door
I love this new renovating trend of painting your front door a bright and cheery colour. But that little pop of colour can really make the whole front of your home look new and improved.
