Young Mum Defends Dad After He Was Called ‘Sicko’ While He Changed His Son’s Nappy At A Parent’s Room

A young mother came to the defence of a father after another woman called him a ‘sicko’ when he went into a shopping centre parents’ room to change his son’s nappy.

Taking the incident to Facebook, Tamika Ives, 18, from Sunshine Coast, said she felt sorry for the father who left the parents’ room embarrassed with his naked son in his arms after another woman called him a ‘sicko’, but the incident only fuelled her intentions to help the father.

Ms Ives said she came to the father’s defence and brought him back to the change room where he had left his belongings and told the other woman that she would “100% back the dad up”, when the woman threatened to call security.

Ms Ives decided to share the experience in the Sunny Coast Community Board Facebook group after seeing other women staring at the father in the parents’ rooms and giving rude comments under their breaths.

The incident happened at Kawana Shoppingworld about a month ago when Ms Ives took her nine-month-old daughter Savannah into the parents’ room.

Then another woman, who had two boys with her, started hurling abuse at the father who was changing his son’s nappy, saying the room was “only for mothers” and telling him to “get out you sicko”.

She also accused the father of staring at her children, then she threatened to call security if he didn’t leave the room.

At that point, despite being midway through changing his son’s nappy, the father picked up his naked son, abandoned his belongings and stood outside the room.

“I kinda wasn’t sure at first if I should say anything because I had my nine-month-old with me, but as soon as she started saying she was going to falsely accuse the dad of being a pervert, that was when I decided I wasn’t going to let him stand there and cop it,” Ms Ives said.

Ms Ives then brought the dad back into the change room and told the other woman that she would back the dad up if accusations were made to security guards. Shealso said that there were other mums at the parents’ room at the time, but ‘they sat and turned away.’

She said that the woman sat down and stared at the father and his son until they had finished.

“I waited for him to finish, then we left together while the woman was still sitting there on her phone with her kids in the playpen,” Ms Ives said. “I just think it’s ridiculous, I can’t believe some women act like that. He’s a parent, he’s a dad and I think it’s disgusting.”

Ms Ives’ post has gained more than 2000 reactions with comments from people on social media who shared the same sentiments with her.

She said that she hoped the experience had brought attention to the issue. “They shouldn’t have to plaster posters around (the room) saying dads are welcome too,” she said.
