Meet the seven-year-old girl whose uncombable hair makes her look like Einstein — but extremely adorable.
This is Shilah Calvert-Yin. She has insane blonde locks that is much the same as genius Albert Einstein’s or Doc Brown’s from Back To The Future.
Yet, Shilah doesn’t mind.
“It’s not ordinary and it’s not boring like everyone else’s.
“Everyone knows me and remembers me – especially at school; all the grade levels know who I am.
“I think my friends wish they had hair like mine,” she said.
Shilah, from Melbourne, has what is called an Uncombable Hair Syndrome, which is believed to impact only around 100 people worldwide. The syndrome is caused by a mutation to one of three genes – PADI3, TGM3 and TCHH – and though there is no cure, it is believed to become more manageable with age.
She and her mother, Celeste, 36, tried to comb her hair but they just couldn’t control it.
It was not until about nine months ago when the family learned from a doctor that Shilah has the UHS. “Shilah draws attention everywhere she goes and always has since her hair grew through at about three months old,” Celeste said.
When the family finally understood Shilah’s condition, they decided to create an Instagram account, so that others could also learn from how the condition changes with age and to show off Shilah’s adorable hair.
Celeste is proud not only of Shilah but of her older brother, Taelan, as well who has been supportive of her. “Her older brother, Taelan, has been a fantastic support when other children make comments towards her or even touch her,” she said.
Now, Shilah has tried her hand at modelling – something her family hope will show the positive side of embracing such a condition.
“Shilah is used to all the attention and has begun to manipulate and work situations in her favour. Hence why we decided that modelling will embrace her unique look and she has the personality and attitude to pull it off,” Celeste said.
